Oradisc™ Benzocaine

Overview

Oradisc™: an advanced topical delivery system with anaesthetic.

Oradisc™ is an in-licensed technology developed and marketed by Uluru Inc, a North American company. Meldex has the rights to market and sell the Oradisc™ erodible mucoadhesive patch in countries outside of the Americas, but specifically Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The disc, approximately 10mm in diameter, is placed onto and immediately adheres to the gum or inside mouth, releasing the active material directly onto the contact area. Blood levels of the pharmaceutical active can be achieved faster and more effectively, as the drug enters directly into the blood vessels beneath the mucosa. The outer layer of the disc protects the active containing layer from erosion by the gums, tongue and saliva. Presently, Meldex offers the Oradisc™ Benzocaine for the relief of alpthous mouth ulcers. It releases a small amount of Benzocaine, an anaesthetic material, directly onto the sore, giving pain relief. The sore is further protected from food, saliva and the mouth parts by the disc. It is widely known that ulcers are aggravated during eating, and application of a disc just prior to eating is most beneficial.

Features of Oradisc™:

  • Localised release of 15 mg of anaesthetic Benzocaine
  • Delivers fixed individual prescribed dose directly to the ulcer
  • Instant and prolonged sustained relief from mouth ulcer pain for up to 3 hours
  • Blood levels of active can be achieved faster and more effectively, as the drug enters directly into the blood vessels beneath the mucosa
  • Convenient and non-obtrusive device which conforms in shape to the oral cavity
  • Enhanced convenience, portability and discreet format
  • Addresses the shortcomings of current topical analgesic therapy:
    • Short-lived activity
    • Mouthwashes are invasive and may cause excessive irritation and loss of senses - i.e. heat and taste
    • No physical protection for the ulcerated area
    • Gels tend to have poor mucoadhesive properties and can be difficult to apply
The Meldex and Uluru partnership extends to participation in future joint developments.
